Intro to 1, 2, and 3 John
This Sunday, Pastor Travis introduced us to the letters of 1, 2, and 3 John, helping us see the heart behind these powerful books. While each letter addresses different situations, they all share a common theme: loving correction.
John wrote as a spiritual father to believers he deeply cared about. His goal wasn’t to condemn, but to call God’s people back to what was true, right, and good. Throughout these letters, John’s correction consistently falls into three categories:
Correct Doctrine — Believe the truth about who Jesus is.
Correct Obedience — Live in a way that reflects your faith.
Correct Love — Love God and love others as Christ has loved us.
Far from being harsh or judgmental, John’s words remind us that correction is one of the ways God demonstrates His love for His children. Just as a loving father guides and disciplines his children for their good, God lovingly corrects us so that we may walk more closely with Him.
As we begin this journey through John’s letters, may we receive God’s correction with humble hearts, knowing it flows from His love and desire for our growth.
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.” — Proverbs 3:11-12
Lord, help us to embrace Your truth, walk in obedience, and love as You have loved us.
